![]() Cows entering the 50-bale rotary - No. 4 Dairy Summary: No. 4 Dairy Unit is located near the southern end of the Massey University campus and is the largest of the three dairy farms administered by the University, comprising of 225.9 hectares (193.8 ha effective) of dominantly Tokomaru Silt Loam soils. Approximately 480 Friesian and Friesian / Jersey cross cows are milked through a 50 bale rotary cowshed, equipped with the DeLaval ALPRO system (electronic identification, milk yield sampling, auto-drafting). No. 4 is a seasonal supply dairy farm, utilising a pasture-based production system (supplements are used to buffer the effects of seasonal pasture growth). The farm itself is subdivided into approximately 85 x 2.3 ha paddocks, with two concrete feed-pads providing 500 cow capacity. Farm objectives:
