Deer Research Unit

Happy, healthy deer - DRU

Summary:
The Deer Research Unit came into existence in 1980, consisting of 24 hectares of land near the southern end of the Massey University campus. The unit is essentially flat and mantled with Tokomaru Silt Loam soils. Wintering 100 breedling hinds (Red deer), facilities include recently constructed yards and a new deer shed for hosting research. Current research topics include evaluating different pasture cultivars and investigating the effects of velvet removal.


Farm objectives:
  • To provide a facility for quality research, teaching and extension in deer farming.

  • To provide a link between the University and Agribusiness.
